This site explores topics important to teachers.
I have been an educator for 21 years, working as both a middle and high school teacher and an instructional coach. Currently, I teach 7th and 8th grade Language Arts at a middle school in the JeffCo School District near Denver. During my career, I’ve worked in urban, rural and suburban districts as well as both public and private schools in Washington, Kansas, and now Colorado. I had the great fortune to spend 7 years on Dr. Jim Knight’s Instructional Coaching team through the Center for Research on Learning at the University of Kansas.
Not surprisingly, I’m passionate about learning. I’ve logged 10 years in higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism, a master’s in curriculum development, and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction (major in Language Arts and minor in educational psychology).
If money were no object, I‘d be working on an MFA in creative writing (maybe some day!). For now, I’ve had to be content with growing myself as a writer through the Denver Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, and Lighthouse Writers’ group in Denver. I believe I can only become a better teacher of writing by being an active writer myself.
